Snowflake Ornaments -- How To

I adore snowflakes. Whether they're stylized or realistic, elegant shades of white or bright and garish colors, I love them all! Now you can make your own~

Materials needed --

Large round beads
Large metal beadcaps
Metallic Silver ribbon - Available at supplycandy

Round nose pliers

Take one wire form. Working on one branch at a time, thread one spacer bead (I used vintage white lucite), a silver round bead, a beadcap, a large round bead, another beadcap, another silver bead, a large faceted oval, and a last silver round.

Using your roundnose pliers, make a loop on the end of the branch.

Repeat this pattern on each of the following 5 branches.

Your snowflake is finished, but you still need a way to display it. Decide how long you'd like the snowflake to hang, and cut a length of ribbon twice that long, plus a couple inches. Thread the ribbon through one of the loops you made and even up the ends. Tie an overhand knot, leaving a bit of a tail.

Now, you can display your ornament however you see fit. I like to make several in varying lengths and sizes to display in my front windows.

Sewing Supplies: Patterns - Gremly Girl

Gremly Girl is a great shop with vintage sewing patterns and other goodies. It is really easy to find exactly what you want in this shop, as the patterns are organized by decade. You can also search the shop by measurement, such as bust size. Gremly Girl has a return policy, so you can be confident with every purchase at this shop.

What Gremly Girl loves about vintage patterns is that each one is a little treasure, offering a glimpse into the past. She loves finding new designs, studying the changes in fashion, and running across notes and ephemera a prior seamstress might have added to a pattern. For more on her obsession, visit her blog at http://patternjunkie.typepad.com/.

Altered Ribbon - How To

Materials Needed --

Decide what length of ribbon you need for your project. Cut it off, plus a couple inches.

Place some scrap paper over your work space. I like to use copy paper. Put the ribbon on that and run the inkpad over it until you reach your desired color intensity. I chose the weathered look for the sample.

Run your paper towel over the newly inked ribbon to remove the excess ink.
Using your small alphabet stamps, choose a message to stamp out. I like to spell out the message and space it out before committing. This also helps to avoid spelling errors.

Once done, set it aside to dry completely. I like to leave mine at least overnight.

You now have customized ribbon, with a handmade touch. I wouldn't recommend laundering this ribbon, but it's great for most projects.

Holiday Gift Tags

With Christmas around the corner, it's time to think about what those gifts of joy should be tagged with. A search on Etsy with the terms "Esst tag" will give lots of possibilities for tags galore. This gift tag is from Circle in the Sand's shop.

Here's another gift tag that I found doing this same search. These homemade, handcrafted tags are simply delightful details. The recipient will know that a lot of care and love went into your selection of their gift.

Begin your search for Holiday Tags here.

Social Networking

Team ESST is everywhere. You can find us on My Space, We Love Etsy, Indiepublic, Flickr and Facebook to name just a few Social Networks. What are the benefits of having a presence on all these sites though? Why are we everywhere?

Social networking benefits both parties in a shopping relationshiop. It helps us get to know our customers better through their comments on our blogs and networks. We get to see who our customers are, what they respond to, and a bit more about why they've chosen to shop with us. It also allows our customers to get to know us a little bit through the personal information we post about ourselves. When shopping online it can be difficult to establish that wonderful in-person relationship you might find in your neighborhood store, but Social Networking helps to recapture that feeling by providing an easy way to communicate with each other.

Please take the time to get to know us a little bit better though our many outlets, and please continue to give us feedback. We love hearing what you have to say!

Wists: Create your own Wish List

My family always asks what I'd like for gifts for the holidays. Sometimes, there is a crafting supply or some hard-to-explain item I want on Etsy. Unfortunately I find it pretty difficult to show the gift giver exactly what I want.

That is until I discovered Wists. It is a wish list & social shopping website that allows you to collect images and links to all the things you'd like to buy on the web. This is a particularly good idea for shopping on Etsy. I know you can use your favorites on Etsy to do this as well, but with Wists you can write up a little note giving details about each item. For example: If I added a fabric swatch I can say "I'd like 2 yards of this fabric please."

It is pretty easy to use. Just sign up and follow the directions to install their button on your browser's toolbar. Any time you see something you like you can click the button in your browser and it will add the item to your wish list. Whenever someone asks what you'd like as a gift, just send them a link to your list. Hopefully it will help you get everything you want this holiday season.

Here is one I started to try it out to see what it is all about: http://wists.com/beesquarefabrics Take a look and let us know what you think.

Thedestash Interview

Jessica Sharrah is a talented Ceramic Artist who makes beautiful beads of clay and gorgeous ceramic rings. Her Thedestash shop is one that jewelry artists flock to for unique design opportunities. Here is a short interview with Jessica. Enjoy.

1. Why clay?
I began just using gemstone and glass to make beads...then thought it would be great to be able to make the colors and shapes that I wanted - when I wanted....and then things sort of fell into place.

2. What's your favorite tool?
My kiln - magic happens in there (I know - it's more equipment - but it's my favorite!)

3. How long have you been claying?
Almost 2 1/2 years.

4. What is your favorite item in your shop right now?
The L-O-V-E links

5. What are you currently creating?
Unfortunately right now I am working on things for my other shop, but very soon will have beads and pendants of all shapes and sizes filling this shop!

6. What do you want your customers to know most about your work?
That I love it - and hope that it shows!

Yes, it does, Jessica. Thanks for a great interview.

Sewing Supplies - Patterns: Destasing Diva

In the world of Etsy you'll find an array of supply sellers. Some sell new items, some handmade, some vintage and some specializing in destashing. Destash is a term used when a crafter tries to free up their supplies, or stash, by selling or trading them for newer items. Destashing Diva a member of Team ESST is one of these shops. The idea is brilliant, it is great for the environment, allows for more affordable prices, and puts some fantastic patterns back into circulation.

Destashing Diva has a nice range of vintage to contemporary children's and adult patterns available in her shop. She gives a nice description of what types of fabric work for each pattern as well as sewing level and condition of the pattern.

Please visit Destashing Diva on Etsy for new and destashed sewing patterns.

Sewing Supplies: Patterns - Pattern Shop

I've talked a little bit about all the great fabrics that the Etsy Supply Street Team has to offer, but what to do with all that fabric? Why not try out a vintage sewing pattern? A series of Sewing Supplies posts will highlight the members of Team ESST who offer amazing sewing patterns.

This week we will focus on Pattern Shop

What I love about Pattern Shop is her wide range of pattern offerings. There are clothing pattens for children, women and men - patterns for bags & purses, doll crafts, and home decor. Many of these patterns are vintage and of retro style but others are contemporary. I think there has something for everyone in this shop.

Another great feature you'll find at Pattern Shop is a nice clear image of the front of the pattern, and best of all, a scan of the back too! This way you'll be able to figure out all your fabric needs before you purchase the pattern.

Pattern Shop currently has a BUY 1 GET 1 HALF OFF SALE! Buy any sewing pattern and get the second pattern half of equal or lesser value - enjoy this sale while it lasts. Also, if you buy 3 patterns at once you'll enjoy free shipping.

Please visit http://patternshop.etsy.com for all your sewing patten needs.

Etsy Plug on Apartment Therapy

Amber B on the blog Apartment Therapy has written a post entitled: Simple Green: Gearing Up for Holiday Shopping. It's about saving money whilst being eco-friendly, and among the techniques she suggests is to shop at Etsy.

• Better yet, buy everything handmade. You can delve into the world of online shopping, turning to Etsy to find the perfect hand-knit scarf for your best friend, or just the right wallet for your younger brother. Supporting handmade goods is a great way to impact local communities. Plus, without mass production, the carbon footprint is itty-bitty. And, of course, you can look for upcycled or recycled items that will have an even better green imprint. You need to shop soon, though; Etsy items need to be shipped, and many sellers already have holiday instructions up on their site. So plan ahead!

It's nice to hear a public reference to Etsy that does not seem to think that ETSY is only a "flea market." So get thee over to her blog, teammates, and comment positively on her post! (That gets your name out there for her readers to look for when shopping at ETSY.)

1 pewter angel wing bead
1 12mm glass flower bead (for skirt)

Step 2 - Using flat nose pliers, bend head just above the angel-head bead.

Step 3 - Using round nose pliers, loop headpin around pliers creating a small loop, then wrap the head pin around itself, between the loop and the angel-head bead to secure (see fig.2).

Step 4 - Using wire cutter, trim head pin. Using flat nose pliers flatten any excess wire to prevent snagging.

Step 5 - Using both pliers, gently open jump ring - pulling one side towards you and one side away from you. Slide headpin loop onto jump ring. Close jump ring.

Voila! Your own guardian angel! You can now strong your angel onto a chain, ribbon or cord! Make it into a bookmark, or even a cell phone or purse charm!

How to Find the ESST Promo Thread on ETSY's Forum

Tutorial: Finding the Team Esst Weekly Promotion Thread

I. For People Who Need To Find The New Thread / Find the Thread For The First Time.

1) Navigate to the forum main page, the one with the five most recent posts under each category. http://www.etsy.com/forums_main.php or Etsy--->community ----> forums.

2) In the main ETSY header there is a search bar. It has two sections--a drop down box to the left telling you what category of item you are searching, and a blank bar to the right for you to enter your search terms. The default option on the drop down box will be "Forum titles" (if you are on the main forum page), so you don't have to make any changes there.

3) Type "ESST" into the search window and press the "Search" button, which is directly to the right of the search bar.

4) You will see a new screen that has all the forum posts that have "ESST" in the titles. Generally the most recent promo thread will be at the top (or near to the top), and will read something like, "@--}--Team ESST-Etsy Supply Street Team Weekly PROMO *Oct 19 to 26".

5) Click on that thread title to go to the thread. When the thread is closed the last post will give the link to the new thread.

II. For People Who Have Posted In the ESST Thread.

1) Navigate to the forum main page, the one with the five most recent posts under each category. http://www.etsy.com/forums_main.php or Etsy--->community ----> forums.

2) BENEATH the main ETSY / search bar there is, on the right, a bright blue link: "View Topics You've Posted In."

3) Click that link. The page will refresh to show you all the threads in which you've posted; the most recent will be at the top. You should be able to find the ESST thread in the first few entries.

4) If not, see above :)

A fond farewell...

It's with sad hearts, but multitudes of best wishes that Team ESST says farewell to one of our fearless team moms, Faro.

Faro has been an amazing driving force behind Team ESST - she's kept us organized, on our toes and banded together, and we'll miss her dearly!

One of the main reasons Faro is saying good-bye is that her passions have changed and she'll be moving on from mosaic supplies to focus on her fabulous vintage jewelry, found at Oh Faro 2. So for all you mosaic makers - be sure to keep your eyes on Oh Faro! to take advantage of Faro's bulk tile sale - coming soon!

On behalf of the team, a big fond farewell and best of luck with your new vintage-ventures! And don't forget to come back and visit - we'll miss you!

Introducing the ESST Street Team: Destashing Diva

This is the next in my series about the wonderful peeps of Team ESST. Today's topic is:

Destashing Diva has a funky shop, focused around sewing patterns and supplies. She's got 1980s and earlier patterns, a hefty chunk of sewing supplies, and cool fabric fat quarters and bundles, like this piece:
Her patterns are great for kids and adults. She even has some scrapbooking supplies -- fiber is fiber, after all, and many scrapbook embellishments use sewing notions.

With 175 items for sale, and 100% satisfaction, you're sure to find something good in this shop!

Introducing the ETSY Supplies Street Team: Doodles Mosaic Tiles

This is the next in my series about the wonderful peeps of Team ESST. Today's topic is:

Doodles Mosaic Tiles has a broad array of mosaic tiles for mosaic artists. Many of her tiles are clear, in a variety of patterns and sizes. However, she has lovely broken china tiles, glass globs, and holiday items. Fhe also carries neodymium magnets, and a wonderful clearance section (titled, amusingly, "Oops!") that almost seduced me into trying my hand at mosaics.

By far the most interesting part of her shop, though, are her custom made hand painted tiles. Whimsical, bright, and cheerful, these tiles would turn any mosaic art from humdrum to spectacular.

With 597 sales, Doodles is going great guns! Check her shop out. If you'd like to find older posts in this series, search for the tag ESST members.

Check Out: Sandritocat

Sandritocat's Original Vintage Sewing Patterns has been open for business on Etsy since December 2007, I recently asked owner Sandra a few questions and here's what she had to say:

Q: How did you start selling patterns?
A: I collected "graphics" on vintage patterns then I came into a large amount of patterns and decided to sell them.

Q: What's your favorite item in your shop, right now and why?
A: This fabric reminds me of fabric my Mom used to sew my clothes from.

Q: Recommend something *different* a crafter could use your supplies for.
A: I've used some of the patterns envelopes and patterns pieces in collages. Only if they are missing so many pieces, no one could sew from the pattern.

Q: Do you have a frequent buyer program? or offer bulk pricing?
A: I usually do something special for my 100th, 200th .... sale. I just recently gave 50% to my 500th customer. I also offer combined and free shipping:

FREE SHIPPING OFFER! Offer good in USA only.
Buy 3 patterns or more and I will ship for FREE
Buy 5 Sewing Patterns and get 5% OFF + FREE SHIPPING
Buy 10 Sewing Patterns and get 10% OFF + FREE SHIPPING
Buy 15 Sewing Patterns and get 15% OFF + FREE SHIPPING
Buy 20+ Sewing Patterns and get 20% OFF + FREE SHIPPING

INTERNATIONAL:

Buy 7-9 patterns = $12.50 shipping

Check Out: MK Supplies

Margaret of MK Supplies has been selling supplies on Etsy since March 2008, I recently asked her a few questions and here's what she had to say:

Q: How did you start selling supplies?
A: I am obsessed with vintage beads and supplies in general, I myself am a jewelry designer and artist. I decided when I started to hoard vintage supplies for my own creations, that I might as well own a shop for supplies as well, as half of the fun to me is searching out the materials. It has since blossomed, and become a business that keeps me very busy, and super happy.

Q: What your favorite item in your shop, right now and why?
A: My favorite item in my shop right now are the vintage brass roses with genuine rubies set in them. They were so gorgeous, that I bought every last one of them! I saw endless possibilities with these pieces, and was instantly inspired.

Q: Recommend something *different* a crafter could use your supplies for.
A: While I market my items as jewelry supplies, a lot of jewelry supplies are suitable for altered arts, card making, scrap booking, and embellishing just about anything. I have seen gorgeous collages made using vintage plastic flowers like the ones I sell in my shop
To sum it all up Margaret says that her shop has a large amount of unused (old stock) vintage items, and new contemporary items that work wonderfully with vintage style designs. She also carries a decent amount of contemporary Czech glass beads. MK Supplies is constantly expanding, and Margaret takes great pride in my customer service. And she ships worldwide! So pop on over to MK Supplies and have a look around.

Margaret also uses her supplies in fabulous creations - which you can check out in her other Etsy shop, Margaret Kelly.

What'cha Looking For?

Since the rebirth of Alchemy on Etsy there have been many a commercial supply request posted there... of course if you read the D&D's you know that commercial supply requests are not kosher in alchemy. Soooo.... after a quick chat and a bit hurah ESST will be hosting a Commercial Supply Alchemy thread in the forums.

It's a place to safely come and make your requests for those hard to find commercial supplies, and be seen by a number of supply shops! Even outside of the promos threads can be burried quickly, and you may not always get the results you need. So we're hoping this thread can help bring supply hunters together with suppliers!

Come on over and post your commercial supply requests today! :)

A Super-Quick Super Simple Tutorial

I originally posted this tutorial on my blog, but have agreed to share it here. I've been wearing my bracelet all over town and get tons of compliments on it.

I've been looking at
these sequins for 6 months, thinking that they'd make cool jewelry. Today, I finally sat down and did something with them!

Here's what you need to make your own -

  • 1 pkg of the above sequins, available in my Etsy shop. One package should make 2 bracelets. You could also get two packages and make a necklace.
  • 1 clasp - I used a silver snap clasp for ease of use.
  • Jump Rings - I used 7 (seven) 6mm jump rings.
  • Pliers for opening jump rings

How to make it -

  1. Using your pliers, open a jump ring. Link two donut sequins, through the small holes along the edge, using a jump ring. Close the jump ring.
  2. Open another jump ring. Connect another sequin to the chain of two you've started. Close jump ring. Repeat until bracelet reaches your desired length. I used 6 sequins.
  3. Once your bracelet reaches your desired length, open another jump ring. Use this to connect your clasp to one end of the sequin chain. Repeat with the opposite side of the clasp and other end of the sequin chain.
  4. Voila! You have a very cool, very bold, very lightweight bracelet!

Make sure that you don't have a twist in the sequin chain. If this happens, simply open one jumpring and untwist the chain. This may happen when you add the clasp.
