May First Weekend Shopping Extravaganza

By Evie's Tool Emporium

The Etsy Supply Street Team - ESST - is proud to announce the "May - First Weekend Shopping Extravaganza".

The May event will run from Thursday, May 7th - Sunday, May 10th, 2009. ALL ETSY SHOPS - HANDMADE, SUPPLIES AND VINTAGE - are invited to participate by placing an announcement in your shop and joining in with promoting on the "Official" Promotional thread in the Etsy Forums.

This will be a “Shopping Event” similar to a Public Marketplace. There will not be a "Overall theme" since Etsy is a Global Marketplace hence, the seasons, cultures, holidays, etc. can vary quite a bit. Although not required, we do strongly encourage shops to have a feature, theme or sale as this can pique interest and help you to draw people to your shop.

You do not have to participate for the whole weekend simply join in when you can on the Promo thread in the Etsy Forums. You can search for the official thread - “MAY FIRST WEEKEND SHOPPING EXTRAVAGANZA MAY 7TH-MAY 10TH”. Here is the Promo thread in the Etsy Forums:

The only requirement is that you have a shop on Etsy and help promote by joining in and bumping the thread throughout the weekend. Talk about your shop and what you have to offer our shoppers.

Those of you who blog or twitter can post and/or tweet about it and promote to people that are off Etsy to visit us. It will provide the Etsy community with publicity, making our shops more visible, and hopefully creating a monthly event shoppers will look forward to.

If you have any questions please convo the Etsy Supply Street Team.

April 24th is Etsy Day

By Evie's Tool Emporium

Today, Friday April 24th is Etsy Day! Take a moment to appreciate all the efforts of the shop owners on Etsy! So many people twittered about Etsy today that the Wall Street Journal noticed!

MEET...Altered Art Supplies.

Altered Art Supplies + Fabric Samples

What do you sell?

I sell vintage supplies which are mostly from my overflow of odds and ends from my Antiques and Collectibles business

What's your favorite item/line that you sell?

novelties and toys

Give us an idea on how to use your products. Do you have a picture of YOUR OWN project? for altered art, steampunk, collage, jewelry, embellishment, etc.

I have put together some DIY kits, but I don't actually make items.

How did you choose your user name?

Most of my customers who were buying my damaged or missing piece goods were using them for altered art. Hence, the name.

Street clothes or Pajamas?

Biggest indulgence or guilty pleasure?

dark chocolate

Favorite food?

Favorite non-craft website?

EBay Favorite craft website (not Etsy)? don't have one

What is one thing that nobody would know about you.

I used to have stark white hair.

What are your plans/goals for 2009?

To take better pictures and constantly put more items into my shops.

Where else do you sell? Other IDs, sites, local shops, etc .

I wear many hats. I have 2 other stores on Etsy: FabricSamples...which is also part of this team and Shefindsthings which sells Vintage and Collectibles. I sell on EBay under Shefindsthings at Nostalgia. I have five booths in an Antique Center in Quechee, VT where I sell vintage and collectibles. I have many private customers who buy huge quantities of designer fabric samples from me.

What do you sell?

I sell discontinued trade only high end designer fabric samples.

What's your favorite item/line that you sell?

Give us an idea on how to use your products. Do you have a picture of YOUR OWN project?

I have many customers who use these samples to make fabulous handbags and pillows. I have other customers who cut up and use these samples as appliqu├ęs for textile art.

How did you choose your user name?

I was looking for a sell describing name, hence FabricSamples

Get to know.... 'The Artist's Closet'

What is your Etsy shop name?
The Artist's Closet

How did you come up with that name?
I thought of the place where I keep my art supplies and where people would most likely store theirs.

What sort of crafting supplies do you sell?
In The Artist's Closet I sell Mixed Media, Book Arts, and Altered Art supplies.

Street clothes or PJ's?
- sorry Yoga pants and an over-sized sweatshirt or sweater. The pleasures of working from home!

Favorite website(s) aside from Etsy?
Apartment Therapy
The Dalai Lama
ok-I'm a bit of a web geek!

Do you craft yourself?

If so, what do you like to make?
Jewelry, Collage, Decorative Art

Please tell us one thing that nobody would know about you.
I don't like wearing socks. Even in the dead of Maine Winters.

What is your favorite thing to make for dinner?
If I am alone (without my husband or boys) I love imported cheese, stoned wheat thin crackers, red grapes, pistachio nuts and a glass of wine. With my family we have been into Indian Food lately. Tandoori chicken, even though I don't have a tandoori oven.

What goals do you have for your shop over the next year?
To increase sales in all six of my Etsy shops by marketing off site. Create more handmade goods. Try to establish more wholesale accounts of my handmade items in local shops (live in Maine-seasonal coastal community).

I have a total of six shops on Etsy. Three Supply shops and Three Handmade.

For all your Mixed Media, Book Arts, and Altered Art supply needs.

For a unique selection of Vintage inspired Supplies such as Birds, Nests, Imported Die Cuts and Dredens.

For a Variety of Paper and Vintage Ephemera.

For Artful Seasonal Arrangements.

For an eclectic assortment of French inspired creations.

My Own Jewelry, Accessory and Decorative Arts Designs can be found here.

Twitter your way to sales.

Hi there. As an avid twitter bug i thought i'd drop a quick blog about 3 ways you can help grow your etsy site, promote ESST and publish your stock to a wider audience. Twitter is a great application. It's the fastest growing social network in the world.

If you don't have a twitter account yet head to and sign up.

1) Tell people on etsy that you twitter, its as easy as Twitter: @Tinyark. You can search twitter for keywords such as knitting, craft and tools. This will show you all the posts and who made them on these subjects.

2) Twitter goes out to millions of people. You posts last for ever and you never know who will read them. Use this to shout out to the world about and the April Extravaganza. PLEASE ADD #ESST to any tweet about ESST or something you want us to read. We can then search to #ESST and it will pop us.

You can start telling people about this new items/promotion right now and also 'retweet' (republish) you friends and other ESST people posts on your twitter and keep them alive.

3) Using an app like TwitPic you can add images to Twitter. This allows you to add a product to a tweet and let the world hear about it. You can (for example) add a pic, brief description and Etsy URL address to any item you sell.

These 3 simple things can REALLY improve your hit rate online. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE use twitter to promote ESST and it's promos. Remember to add #ESST to posts you want us to retweet.

Additional information..

If you want to include more than just your tweets on Twitter check out This clever site will pluck RSS from what ever feed you want and pop it straight onto your twitter. This means when the latest story hits a craftzine then it will also hit your twitter.

* TOP TIP * This also means everytime you post a new item on ETSY it will be posted on twitter too.
